Past
Aenios was abandoned on The Great Temple steps by his mother. The exact reason why she had decided to leave him there matter not to the priests who ended up raising him--in fact many of them came to the conclusion that his being there was the will of the gods and he was likely to be chosen to serve as one of their vessels. There, however, no guarantee that he would be chosen, but the mere possibility meant he needed to be trained for that potential outcome. The gods chosen should be the very best the world had to offer. It was for this very reason that he was kept under strict lock and key and endured the most grueling upbringing imaginable. Saying his childhood was an unhappy one was a vast understatement, and he often dreamed of freedom, but making that dream into reality was not far from an easy task. He tried countless times and just as many ways to give himself the freedom he sought--including taking his own life, but the priests were always there to stop any attempts he might make of breaking his chains.
One day he managed to slip past the priests and straight into the Dhalaken forest. This was the furthest he gotten from the priests clutches, and he thought he might have finally succeeded in securing his freedom. This new found freedom might lead to his death as it was said any who weren't of the forest caught wandering too long were struck down. Aenios welcomed death. It might be said he welcomed it's embrace--especially if it meant never having to return to the temple. It's unclear how long he wandered about the forest before he encountered her. She was a Vykrian hunter who made their home within the forest, and instead of killing him on the spot as her people are known to do with outsiders she spoke to him. This was the first time he felt seen. More than that she brought him to live among her people, and for the very first time he was regarded as a person with wants and desire rather than a tool to be shaped to fulfill a specific purpose. He felt happy for the first time in his life, and he found himself wanting to spend of his days with the Vykrian--more than that with the hunter who had found him.
He had fallen madly in love with her, but before he could confess his feelings the priests found him and dragged him back to the temple as they believed it was time to see if he was chosen to become a vessel of the gods. He pleaded with them to let him live out his remaining days among the Vykrian. They could surely find someone else worthy of the gods, but they told him that he should be grateful as not everyone had that chance to touch the divine. They told him if he wasn't worthy that he could return to playing pretend with the Vykrian. Something told him that whether or not he was chosen he would never live among the Vykrian again. He would never learn if suspicion was correct or not because he was deemed worthy of becoming a vessel of the gods and found himself transformed from a mere mortal to a god.
Present
The first order he gave once the ritual was completed was for the female Vykrian hunter to be brought to him as he intended to make her his bride. The priests at first protested, telling him that a god didn't take a mere mortal as bride, but he silenced them by reminding them who was the god. They fetched the woman for him, who was far from happy with being abducted. She demanded that her captured released her before either she or her brother killed them where they stood. It was only when she caught sight of Aenios that any of her anger subsided, and at first she appeared delighted to see him. That joyous emotion was quickly replaced by more anger and fear as it dawned upon her what had been done to him. It wasn't fear for himself that she was displaying, but rather for him. She began to keen loudly---a sign of mourning among her people. She believed that the priests had destroyed his very soul and doomed him to a fate worse than even death.
Then she stopped her mourning cries and regarded Aenios with a hard expression before vowing she would save his soul. She believed that the sheer fact he had the priest drag her here means that he had not been completely lost, and she will do everything within his power to stop him from being consumed by this evil the priests had tried to give him to. He found the entire thing amusing, and while he didn't believe she would succeed she was more than welcome to try. The ritual that helped raise him to the rank of a god couldn't be broken, but one should have goals to strive for.
